The Town of Ladysmith is kicking off plans for a brand-new skatepark next to the Frank Jameson Community Centre (FJCC).

Our existing skatepark has been holding it down since 1999, back when skateboarding was all the rage — Tony Hawk's Pro Skater was released that same year! But that was 24 years ago, and while we gave it a cool makeover in 2011, it’s time for a brand new skatepark design that’s fresh, inclusive for skaters, bikers, and riders of all levels.

That’s why the Town is moving forward with a feasibility study to assess what’s needed now and, in the future. We’ve also teamed up with New Line Skatepark Inc. to create a fresh design, ensuring the new skatepark will be inclusive and user-friendly, perfect for all skill levels.

As part of the project, we’re asking residents and skatepark users to help shape the future of this space by completing the survey below. Your feedback will help the Town and New Line Skatepark come up with a new skatepark design.

Site Considerations

When planning the redevelopment of the new Ladysmith Skatepark, several important factors are being considered:

  • Integration with Existing Landscape: Trees around the skatepark area provide natural buffers and shade, requiring careful incorporation into the new design.
  • Drainage Systems: The existing drainage system at the site directs water to specific points and can be re-utilized in the new design.
  • Topography and Ground Levels: The skatepark need to fit within the designated space without significantly altering the existing footprint or ground levels, and ensure a natural fit with the surrounding ground levels.
  • Accessibility: Improved pedestrian access will be prioritized, including enhanced connections to nearby pathways and key community spaces, ensuring the skatepark is accessible to all users.

These considerations will guide the skatepark's development to ensure it aligns with community needs, while creating an inclusive and functional recreational space.

In light of the park’s specific site constraints and the anticipated budget limitations, three proposed designs options (outlined below) have been carefully developed to prioritize the creation of flowing transition zones, which will facilitate a smooth and dynamic riding experience.

At the same time, select street elements have been thoughtfully incorporated into the design to introduce a sense of variety and diversity, ensuring that the final layout accommodates a broad range of riding styles and preferences. These elements will work together to create a balanced and engaging environment for all riders.

Option #1 - Open Mini Ramp Horseshoe Pocket and Flow Street Zone

Option #2 - Enclosed Bowl with Mini Ramp and Tech Street Plaza

Option #3 - Three Pocket Bowl with Perimeter Boomerang Street Lanes

Based on feedback gathered during our open house workshop in October and the first online survey, three preliminary skatepark concepts have been developed for further input.

Results & Preferred Skatepark Terrain Style

Results from the first survey shown above (data from New Line Inc.)

The feedback highlighted a strong preference for Bowl/Transition Terrain, with 70% of respondents favouring features that promote flowing movement and continuous lines.

Popular elements included the Mini Ramp and Flow Bowl, which cater to riders seeking speed and carving opportunities.

Although Street/Plaza Terrain received 30% of the vote, technical features like flat ledges and benches were still considered important for variety and trick performance.

The designs will prioritize versatility and flow, accommodating riders of all skill levels while maintaining a clean, functional layout.

Considering the park's site constraints and budget, the proposed design options focus on creating smooth transition zones while incorporating select street elements for variety. The final design will reflect your feedback and may blend elements from all three concept options.
